Position Overview

Under direct supervision, employees in this class operate trucks and light construction machinery in the construction and maintenance of bridges, roads, water pipes, and other structures. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all equipment they use, including minor repair and maintenance. Work is semi-skilled in nature, conforming to the detailed instructions given by a supervisor, with inspections occurring during its progress and after completion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)
  • Drives various mid-size dump, and tank trucks while hauling construction and maintenance materials, as well as tools and trash.
  • Operates a wheeled tractor with a roller, gradall, broom, plow, or mower attachment.
  • Operates small asphaltic oil heater, tractor and truck loaders, patching rollers, and compression equipment.
  • Acts as a relief operator for distributors and loaders.
  • Operates jackhammers and performs other manual labor tasks as required.
  • Washes, oils, greases, and performs all other general maintenance on any equipment used.
  • Notifies supervisors of safety hazards or vehicles that will not comply with D.O.T. standards.
  • Transports vehicles to Motor & Equipment Services or other facilities to be repaired.
  • Keep records of all deliveries.
  • Transports workers and tools.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience
  • The position requires any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of any level of primary or secondary education that did not result in the awarding of a high school diploma or an equivalency diploma.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Working knowledge of the traffic laws, techniques, and procedures pertaining to the safe and efficient operation of trucks and equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of trucks, wheeled tractors, and other lighter equipment.
  • Skill to perform basic maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to make judgments regarding roadworthiness and compliance per D.O.T. regulations.
  • Must be physically capable of performing strenuous manual labor in adverse weather conditions.

Other Requirements

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to pass a D.O.T. commercial driver's physical and drug screen.
  • Must be able to communicate to other workers and supervisors, both by radio and in person.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  • Needs to be able to work in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Needs to be able to position oneself to stoop, kneel, or crawl on occasion.
  • Must be able to observe their surroundings.
  • Must be available for 24-hour on-call duty for emergencies within the assigned district.
Certifications or Licenses Required
  • Must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (or obtain within six months of employment) and be insurable by the Madison County Commission's risk underwriters.
  • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) will be obtained and reviewed annually.
  • Must be registered for the FMCSA DOT Clearinghouse if you have a CDL License.

Assuming the services are covered you will normally only be responsible for out of pocket.

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.

Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule

Employee Clinic: Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County's health insurance plan as their primary coverage.
