Big Projects in the US Now

Los Angeles Olympic Games

Los Angeles will be hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics. Construction began on new facilities in 2023 and is scheduled to finish in the first half of 2028. The projects are vast, and include housing for the Olympians, nicknamed The Olympic Village, as well as facilities for the competitions. There is a concerted effort to use existing facilities whenever possible and to focus on sustainable building to reduce the environmental impact of the games. The city has decided to spread the 3,000 residential units across various parts of Los Angeles to highlight the diversity of the city and give attention to different areas.

Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is a multi-decade project that has been called the largest urban renewal project since Rockefeller. The undertaking includes many phases, big construction projects, and adds 16 buildings to Manhattan’s skyline. The buildings are being built on a platform over the storage yard where the Long Island Rail Road stores its trains. Related Companies and Oxford Properties have re-zoned the 28 acres into residential and commercial spaces designed to encourage outdoor and pedestrian activities. The behemoth project will provide about 4,000 residences, 100 stores,  many restaurants, and 18 million square feet of residential and commercial space.

Urban Infrastructure Development

Public transportation adds to a city’s sustainability, increases access for community members, reduces traffic congestion, improves air quality, and provides safe and convenient ways to move people. That’s a lot of public benefit! In no particular order, here are some of the most exciting transportation infrastructure projects happening around the country now.

California Light Rail

The California high-speed rail will be able to carry passengers at speeds of over 200 miles per hour! The train will connect San Francisco with Los Angeles in under three hours. The train system has additional projects underway which include building Brightline West, a high-speed connection between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Connecting the two major centers of commerce and population in the state will help mitigate California’s vehicular traffic problem and open possibilities for intra-state commerce.

JFK Airport Expansion

JFK International Airport in New York City is building a new, high-tech terminal. The new facility will be 2.6 million square feet, have 23 gates, and cost $9.5 billion. Construction began in 2022 and is scheduled to open in 2026. The terminal will have small businesses local to New York for passengers to enjoy and aims to attract 30% minority and women-owned businesses. This new terminal is part of a larger group of projects to improve the airport from 2017 to 2027.

O’Hare Expansion

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is undertaking an $8.5 billion renovation and expansion project that will add terminals and replace Terminal 2. O’Hare is a midwestern hub of air traffic with one of the largest airport systems in the country. The airport completed a $6 billion project that ran from 2005 to 2021 to re-align the runways to optimize air traffic and minimize delays. The new project will focus on the terminals and the customer experience provided by the facilities.
